Stories and the Art of Medicine

I didn’t schedule any clinic appointments for today. I got up at 4.30am to drive to Galway for the dotMD conference (which, you wouldn’t believe, but I thoroughly enjoyed the peace dawn solo drive across the Midlands).
Very, very worth it to spend time reflecting how stories are central to the art of medicine. Reflection with an aim to, in the words of Dr. Ronan Kavanagh, ” soften[s] up the edges of the battle-weary medics”
I’ve been sharing my stories as a doctor and parent – interspersed among the health promotion/education – since I started the social media project and blog in 2018. I always saw the stories as separate or unimportant to my medical practice or indeed the health promotion goal of this project. Today, reframed my thinking: it was never separate and was always important: it was important for me to share those stories and important for those who heard/read those stories. We both learned from those stories. @suzannekovenMD noted today that a writer just starts writing and good writer is surprised by where the story goes. It struck me that she is very right: I started writing in 2018 and this year it ended up as a new medical practice! (2018-me would have been very surprised indeed.)

The summary of my thoughts at the end of day one of #dotMD22 today:

Patient Stories

Doctor Stories

Patient-Doctor Stories

Doctor-as-patient Stories

It’s very telling where people choose to start the story

How we tell them
How we hear them
How we learn from them
How they heal us

For an excellent summary of where I am this weekend, journalist @juneshannon wrote an outstanding piece: https://www.irishtimes.com/health/your-wellness/2022/06/14/storytelling-matters-in-medicine-in-the-same-way-that-storytelling-matters-in-life/

Barefoot on the Beach? Not Me!

Going to the beach this week? Great - pack the sun cream, wear shoes -- and don't pee on your friend's jellyfish sting. My family will be down at the beach alot this week - but we are never barefoot. My boys will likely tell you it's only because I'm no fun. But shoes...

It’s past time for parents to make some smart choices

"I'm not ready to go!" My son put up a small protest being taken home from the skate park yesterday evening. However, home we went. Why? Why not let him stay? It's a beautiful evening, summer break, it's physical activity...? I am, of course, a positively horrible...

This project  has taken the longest break since it started in 2018 this spring as I have been out in the real world, from Galway to Istanbul,Turkiye and from Drogheda to Utrecht, Netherlands. Whether it was at Pint of Science or Yoga Therapy Ireland or on the radio -...

Back To School – Joy? Or Not so Much?

This week we again saw had the annual memes and parodies of parents joyously pushing reluctant kids out of the door back-to-school while pouring themselves large glasses of wine. Controversial: It's okay if you didn't feel that way. I certainly didn't. If one were...
