How are you getting home?

Going out tonight? Before you walk out the door is the time to plan how you will get back.

So, in today’s #HealthyHolidays – let’s make a plan — before you start the evening.

Who is the designated driver?

Or, have you booked a taxi?

Are you lucky enough that you can make plans that include public transport or leaving the car and walking home?

Are you going to plan to drive home — and swap your usual for non-alcoholic (0.0) options?

Top tips to support healthy roads for us all:

1. Never, ever drive under influence of drink or drugs.

2. If you see someone getting behind the wheel under the influence, try to call them a taxi instead. You may be saving not only their lives, but others.

Rules for the Designated Driver (DD) should be agreed before hand. Here are some to consider:

1. The DD doesn’t pay – also consider splurging on decent mocktails or non-alcoholic drinks for DD when it’s your round. Fees for parking or diesel may also be fair.

2. The DD calls time – either have an agreed upon time or an agreement that when DD says time is up, it’s up.

3. The DD takes turns. Unless one of your friends is a non-drinker (for any number of reasons!), take turns this season.

4. Some establishments have free drinks or other offers for DD’s – so worth checking out (and if you are rural publican/bar owner – have you thought about having some?)

5. No one pressures the DD to “have just one”.

Barefoot on the Beach? Not Me!

Going to the beach this week? Great - pack the sun cream, wear shoes -- and don't pee on your friend's jellyfish sting. My family will be down at the beach alot this week - but we are never barefoot. My boys will likely tell you it's only because I'm no fun. But shoes...

It’s past time for parents to make some smart choices

"I'm not ready to go!" My son put up a small protest being taken home from the skate park yesterday evening. However, home we went. Why? Why not let him stay? It's a beautiful evening, summer break, it's physical activity...? I am, of course, a positively horrible...

This project  has taken the longest break since it started in 2018 this spring as I have been out in the real world, from Galway to Istanbul,Turkiye and from Drogheda to Utrecht, Netherlands. Whether it was at Pint of Science or Yoga Therapy Ireland or on the radio -...

Back To School – Joy? Or Not so Much?

This week we again saw had the annual memes and parodies of parents joyously pushing reluctant kids out of the door back-to-school while pouring themselves large glasses of wine. Controversial: It's okay if you didn't feel that way. I certainly didn't. If one were...
