Moderation in the Holiday Season

Written by Dr. Kate McCann

This time of year, I inwardly despair a little when my patients tell me they are planning on being “good” this holiday. Not because I am somehow concerned that they may or may not indulge in a cheese board – but because this means that they somehow feel that there is a moral judgement on whether or not they have some gingerbread or eggnog. And I want my patients to enjoy their holidays (and life in general).

Food is not “good” or “bad.” And eating and socialising are not bad.

The key to everything is moderation.

Have a small piece of whatever treat is going (assuming you enjoy it and it agrees with you.). Don’t judge yourself. But just keep it in moderation. And if you do overdo it once, shrug it off and move on. Guilt helps no one, least of all yourself.

Remember that between the festivities to eat breakfast, eat regular healthy meals and normal snacks full of whole foods, vegetable, protein, and fibre. Don’t skip healthy foods or fast to save up some sort of credit to use up later in a mad binge on unhealthy food later (it’s not a healthy approach to food)

Overindulgence (simply too much) of rich food or alcohol or sugar can cause serious problems for those with health conditions such as gout, reflux, diabetes, certain types of liver disease, or types of heart disease.

“Detoxing” later in January is not a solution to overdoing it now. (Despite the wellness marketing, it’s not a thing. Doesn’t work. Don’t make this a plan. )
