Until very recently, the last time I’d played basketball was when I was 16. Fadó fadó….But I was down at the local Halla Sport tonight playing for the last hour with a great group of ladies. And it was a welcome change from walks or my stationary bike.
It’s worth talking about LSPs (Local Sports Partnerships) because my patients too often have never heard of them.
And it’s really central to idea that your movement, your physical activity is not only necessary for life – but should be enjoyable.
It’s very affordable. There are variety of activities for all abilities. And though I’ve recommended them to patients, I hadn’t done it before, I’m delighted I’m doing it. It’s worth noting that accessibility can be age, economics, language, location, physical — or even confidence. Last year, someone invited me to join a GAA Mothers and Others. Since I grew up abroad, I’ve never picked up gaelic football or a hurley despite the hours on the GAA sidelines watching my husband and sons. I had no confidence to pick up a new full-contact sport, mostly in the dark and cold and often wet. But LSP Socia-ball? This appealed! I knew the basics and it was indoors.
And good chance LSPs will be coming up in clinic again tomorrow — since I’ll likely still be limping with some calf strain in the morning. Note to self: first lay-ups in almost 30 years needed a better warm-up

But totally worth it.
Later this week, for no reason whatsoever, I’ll be blogging on home first aid for calf strain….
