Dreading the impending destruction from Storm Babet – not from the flooding, but from a weekend with your young children stuck inside now that all the matches cancelled because pitches aren’t playable?
Here are my favourite ideas for keeping children active on rainy days:
1. Put on the rain gear and go for a walk to look for Halloween decorations either in your estate or a nearby estate. Some children may enjoy this with a torch after dark for the spooky novelty.
2. Put on the rain gear and go for a splash walk. Yes, that is a walk with express purpose to jump in as many puddles as possible with their boots. Highly recommend. This can be your estate or nearby park with paved paths.
3. If rain isn’t bucketing down or eases for a period, get a ball or jump rope and take it to an area with paving or tarmac.
4. Blow up a balloon – or a few. Many kids will just take it from there. Games include your own versions of volleyball, keepy-uppy, or even basketball (trying to get it into a laundry basket). If you have a paper towel roll or similar, let them create game hitting and chasing balloon.
5. Dance party. Put on music and declare a dance party or dance contest. This can be Disney or music from children’s movies such as Despicable Me (“Happy”) Madagascar (“I Like to Move It, Move IT”) or Shrek (“Now I’m a Believer”). If you have Alexa, you can make it easy and just ask her to “play Disney.”
6. For older teen athletes, encourage them to still get out for a run or work on the exercises they would normally do in training (planks, wall sits, squats).
7. Download or stream yoga for kids/teens. There are lots of options available.
Did you know? Your child – and teen! – need 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity a day to stay healthy!
