#BreakTheBias

The theme for #iwd2022 has been #BreaktheBias.

When it comes to health, female gender matters.

Women report a higher incidence of

  • gender-based and domestic violence
  • eating disorders
  • depression, which affect their wellbeing.

Certain conditions affect women in far great numbers than men: osteoporosis, autoimmune disorders, and certain types of cancer.Heart disease, though seen as a man’s disease by many, affects women equally.

Much of the experience and outcome is due to “social determinants”. This refers to things such as women’s responsibilities in the home and their lower incomes. This is experienced to a greater extent for women with disabilities and women from minority ethnic communities, including Travelling community, as well as older women or those with disabilities.

Regardless of background, multiple studies have shown that women suffer disproportionately in communication in healthcare setting. Women are less likely to feel that their doctor listening or addressing their concerns. #ListenToWomen

Pro-tips: If you disagree with your doctor or think they are distracted, say so. (be kind, though, they may be distracted by earlier patient encounter or fatigue. Give them a chance to re-focus.) If it feels like you are not having good communication, you may need another doctor. You always have the right to request a second opinion or referral. You always have the right to be a partner in your care, and feel heard. Not only do you deserve to feel you can trust your physician, but it can make a huge difference in your health and outcomes.

Because it’s #InternationalWomensDay2022, it’s also worth pointing out that multiple studies have also shown that patients of women physicians have better outcome and satisfaction. However, due to factors such as bias and pay disparity, finding a female physician can be more difficult, especially in certain specialties.
