Did you know I have favourite types of consultations?

Okay, I’ll just say it:  Fertility consultations are the best!

Here are some things that I wish more couples knew before they book in to see me:

  • If you are worred about your fertility, start with your own GP or another in-person IMC registered physician  — not some expensive or boxed blood test that you post in.

  • Lifestyle changes and diet can make a huge difference to many couples BUT these changes should be started early to be the most effective, at least 3 months before you start trying.

  • The bigger picture matters —  it’s not just conception, it’s a healthy pregnancy and whole family health!

  • Sometimes it takes a team of qualified and registered allied health professionals, especially a registered dietitian.  If you have health insurance, some of this is reimburseable!

  • Don’t go medieval and put all the fertility pressure on only one half of the couple!  It takes two to tango – and other things. Even if is a same-sex couple and they already have decided who is going to be taking part in the assisted reproduction, I encourage both partners to make the healthy changes within the home together since it will be so important through pregnancy, post-partum period and establishing healthy habits in their new or growing family.

  • You don’t need expensive supplements but women who could become pregnant DO need folic acid, and this time of year, both partners regardless of gender, should be on Vitamin D.

Did you know?  I regularly bring up fertility with my younger patients who aren’t planning a family yet.  Having these discussions early means patients can make evidence-based and informed decisions about their health, and gives them the best chance of success when and if they are ready.
