Can what you eat affect your risk of dementia? Can what you eat help symptoms if you have a diagnosis of Alzeimer’s?

The short answer is: probably.

The first paper that is worth talking about it Dr. Dean Ornish’s study. They prescribed lifestyle interventions (diet and exercise programmes) for 20 weeks to patients with diagnosis of Alzeimers and found that they had improved compared to a control group that were not prescribed those interventions.

Another study out in JAMA this week is not a trial but a analysis of data collected over years that compared outcomes of patients with the diet they had reported eating. They found that patients that reported eating a diet that was “anti-inflammatory” had much lower risk of developing dementia. There is alot of nutribabble out there, so let’s define “anti-inflammatory diet” – it is one that is high in whole grains, fruits, and veggies – and low in red and processed meats and ultra-processed foods. (No, you don’t need a supplement.)
