Delighted to have a visitor in clinic this afternoon (and not just because she brought amazing vegan treats). Lisa Mellon is health psychologist and lecturer in RCSI. I was recently invited to contribute to @rcsi_irl current module Physical Activity and Health Behaviour Change in Clinical Populations. It’s great to see #lifestylemedicine being included in healthcare professional education.
Ok, that all sounds great – but this isn’t LinkedIn. if you are a patient, what does that mean?
In this case, it means the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland has asked qualified and experienced healthcare professionals (like physios, psychologist, doctors) to share their experience with peers/students on helping patients make changes.
So I shared my approach: patient-led, trauma-informed — and always try to find the joy (don’t ask patients to do something they hate!)
This particular module is on physical activity. Patients who are hesitant. Anxious. Recovering from injury. Recovering from illness…how do we help them get movement back into their lives? Because no matter how young or old you are, no matter what size or shape you are… physical movement is essential for good mental and physical health!
I’ll be in-person at RCSI later this module. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve last walked the halls there, but I’m looking forward to it!
