#HappyMothersDay🌸. When we had our children, all we wanted was for them to be healthy.
Health, as you know from following me, means not just physical health but also emotional and social health (docs call it the biopsychosocial model of medicine). Actually, it is well summed up by Sesame Street: “Grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.” So (NOT!) simple.
And we think we fail at this as mothers. Oh, so often, we worry we have it wrong: Every cough, every tantrum, every backwards glance at the school gate. Every ridiculous fear-mongering clickbait in the FB feed.
So, today, what did you do right? Pick 3 things about your children, and finish this sentence:
“I had no idea how I finally managed it, but I am so proud that my child….”
Want an example? I’ll go first.
I absolutely have no idea how I managed it, but I am so happy that
1) 3 y.o. T. truly loves his baby brother
2) Both boys love their vegetables
3) 3 y.o T. has decided one of the firefighters in his toy fire truck is woman (though I credit Penny from Fireman Sam, more than me being a doc, for this progressive gender equity).
What have you done right? More than you think! Gave up smoking for your baby? Asked for help when you needed it? Vaccinations! Held it together (barely) when s/he started preschool? All those wheezy nights with inhalers as child outgrew asthma? Encouraged them to get over a fear of water to take swimming lessons? That first unprompted ‘Thank You’ or ‘Sorry’ from your little one? Won the battle of the bike helmet? Won the battle of the screen time/figured out parental controls on your child’s screens? Encourage them to try new foods or do new sports? Successfully counted to 10 before losing it with your threenager or teenager? Are you a new mammy and just so proud your little one got the all clear to finally come home after too many days of holding little hands in the NICU/SCBU incubator? 🤱
It all matters. It all makes a difference.
If you want, share in the comments to help other mammies realise that these little victories are actually the big ones. If you don’t want to share, at least take a moment to think it through yourself and pat yourself on the back. You are also growing smarter, stronger, and kinder each day as a mammy!
