Let’s Talk: World Obesity Day

Written by Dr. Kate McCann

Today is World Obesity Day, and I want to thank amazing journalist Louise Walsh for covering this. My interview is in the print editions of the Irish Daily Mirror and Irish Star today.

As a lifestyle medicine physician, one aspect of my practice is supporting patients who are undergoing treatment for obesity, and prevention in at-risk patients. The stories patients share with me about their stigma in healthcare are heart-breaking. They aren’t my stories to tell, though. What I shared today was my perspective as a doctor, and I thought it was especially important as this year’s theme for #WorldObesityDay is #ChangingPerspective and #LetsTalk.

How important is it? If you read the article, you may be struck by the irony that the accompanying photos used are actually somewhat stigmatising. It’s worth noting I specifically suggested that they use stock photos from the ASOI list, but editors went with something else. It just highlights how important these discussions are to raise awareness.

Print editions of today’s Irish Star and Irish Daily Mirror carried interview with me by journalist Louise Walsh as part of coverage of World Obesity Day.
