Loss and the Holidays

Holidays are joyous, but can be a difficult time for those who have suffered bereavement.  Looking after self, or someone you care about, during this time can be difficult as well:

  • It’s okay to change tradition.  It’s also okay if keeping a tradition brings you comfort.  Make a plan that feels right.  If you are supporting someone who is grieving, try to respect what they need.

  • Decide what feels right for you if you are grieving.   Don’t feel obligated to go to a party or gathering that you aren’t ready for.  For others, you don’t need to feel that you have to isolate yourself if being around people is more comforting.  If you need to leave a gathering early, do so.  If you have invited someone to a gathering who is grieving, be understanding if they need to leave early or step out.

  • Consider incorporating a loved one’s memory into your holiday plans, such as a visit to the graveyard or a religious observance.

  • If you are grieving and need help, ask.  Many people are uncomfortable mentioning grief, and may be giving a grieving person more space or not mention the deceased name out of sensitivity.  It’s okay for you to tell people what you need if you are grieving.  It’s also okay to ask someone who is grieving what they need:  space or someone to talk to? Talk about the deceased or not talk about them?

  • Avoid using alcohol to cope with grief, and avoid encouraging someone who is grieving to use alcohol as a coping mechanism. Alcohol can act as a depressant and impair someone’s ability to cope.
