Why am I still watching Operation Transformation if I find it so problematic? It shouldn’t surprise you that patients bring it up in clinic, for a number of reasons. I think it’s helpful to have an informed discussion. So, here’s what Week 3 did right — and what’s still problematic.
What did they get right?
- Meal planning meant leaders bought whole foods and practiced batch cooking. The noticed their food bill was much less, the food was good, and far less waste. This is true! Meal planning and prepping and using whole foods is quite often tastier, healthier, and cheaper.
- The role of nutrition and stress being so important in weight management.
- We saw more of family members getting involved in the cooking and physical activity this week. This is so important! Families and couples who do this together are more likely to succeed in making health changes.
What could be better?
- There was absolutely no reason to put anyone on the scales this week. None, None at all. They could have just focused on any of the improved numbers – including the metrics of strength and balance and how important they are for health – from the repeated the DCU fitness test
- Show still contains all those problematic and out-dated elements of weight bias, diet culture, “eat less, move more”, public weigh-ins.
- What else did they get wrong? I think we’ve unpacked it over the last 2 weeks, and if you missed it, it’s worth looking back here and here
