Ozempic Safety

Patient: “Can I ask you about my Ozempic?”

Me: “When did you start Ozempic?” (also confused as it has nothing to do with why they are here)

Patient: “Few months ago. My beautician has some for her clients. I didn’t think it was any harm.”

Me: 😳 Let’s do some bloods and talk…

Since that Daily Mail piece on Ozempic yesterday, let’s talk #FactsNotFears – when is Ozempic NOT safe:

1. It is NOT safe when pen is from anyone who is NOT a registered pharmacist

2. It is NOT safe if you share a pen: even if you change needles, the reservoir can be contaminated (HIV/hepatitis)

3. IT is NOT safe if the pen does not look like this photo, made by NovoNordisk. There is NO generic version. Fake Ozempic has been seen globally, and is dangerous. (I have foreign ads for fake Ozempic in my email daily!)

4. It is NOT safe to start this treatment from an online dial-a-doc but not tell your other docs you are on this treatment.

5. It is NOT safe to be on Ozempic treatment without regular safety bloods and expert medical checks. Nutritional deficiency complications can be serious.

6. It is NOT safe to be on Ozempic for weight loss if you do not need to lose weight for medical reasons. It is not a drug for cosmetic or beauty use.

Ozempic and Saxenda, when prescribed correctly with correct supports and regular safety checks are SAFE and reduce risks from the disease of obesity. Obesity is a chronic, complex, progressive, recurring disease. Patients with the disease of obesity deserve access to SAFE, QUALIFIED care, including drugs, with dignity. The lack of patient access to care has led us to this point.

No matter how desperate things seem: Please, please, please do NOT go to Turkey/Türkiye. Do not get a gastric band or balloon done in a cosmetic clinic anywhere. It would another post to even list those problems I’m seeing now!  Read more.

Take Away Message: If you have started on Ozempic/Saxenda from questionable source or without supports, are sharing pens, or have returned from weight loss surgery without comprehensive medical support for follow-up, you should seek qualified medical care
