Red Meat and Cancer – what’s the connection?

This headline was on the front page of Independent.ie today, and interestingly, the headline and similar story was also on the front page of the Farming supplement (why I had the Farming supplement in my clinic today is a story for another day).
Patients often ask about diet changes this time of year, often Columbo-style on the way out the door “Eh, Doctor, just one more thing…should I go Paleo?” Today, a couple asked about reducing red meat. Short answer: yes.
This article has it right. #FactsNotFears If anything, we should have had these headlines and these discussions before. Red meat – and especially processed meat with nitrates – is associated with cancer (and some other health risks, like heart disease).
There is alot of data out there, and many international health advisory groups for a few years now have recommended to reduce or eliminate red meat intake. This is completely separate from the equally important environmental impact.
