The Science of Gifting

Written by Dr. Kate McCann
6th December 2023

Today, let’s talk about the science behind giving gifts.  6 December is also traditionally St. Nicholas Day, remembering a 4th century Bishop of Myra who, according to stories, saved an impoverished family’s daughters by tossing dowry money through the window of their home at night — that landed in the shoes – or stocking, depending on the story – by the fire.

Whatever the truth behind Santa Claus’ origin story – what is it about that story that has persisted in human imagination for almost 1600 years, and what can it tell us about our brains?

Almost no one reading this would be surprised to learn that it feels good to give, the literally grain of truth to the adage “it is better to give than to receive”.  Ireland consistently ranks among the most generous countries. So, what’s the science and where can we use this to help improve our health?

  • So, according to the science, what qualifies as a gift?  Physical gifts and money are the obvious, but time, including time spent volunteering, also counts as a gift.  So do donations to charity.

  • What are the health benefits of giving?   In multiple studies,   giving of one’s time or money has been linked to being both happier and healthier.  It  is even connected to living longer!  The effects are not only psychological, but also biochemical, a phenonomenon that is called “helper’s high” by researchers.

  • It literally is the thought that counts when it comes to your health.   Higher rates of happiness are associated with people who donate time or money to causes or organisations that they believe in.

  • Focusing on others, rather than self, can help lift mood. Researchers have found that depression and anxiety can be helped by focusing on others.

  • This all sound great, but you are already stretched for time and money this holiday season?  Small deeds matter, so do small donations.    Research shows it’s the intention rather than the size of the gift or donation.
