World Menopause Day

It’s #WorldMenopauseDay2022 – established more than 10 years ago by the international menopause society for patient and healthcare professional education. #Menopause is now a major marketing target: it is not just your imagination that it’s everywhere.

In an interview earlier this year, Helen Rowe, a brand consultant in Kantar’s Insights division, said: “Conversation around the menopause is evolving but there’s still major work to be done to drive awareness and make sure women are getting the help they need. [commercial] Brands can play an important part in this and in fact our study shows that women actively want them to do more. Consumers expect much more from businesses now than just selling products and brands have power to drive positive social change…”

3 months after that interview was published, I posted when I shocked to see “Menopause Make-Up” in Boots.
The scientist in me had ALOT of questions (like, how is this really different than the anti-aging?)
#Menopause is a market that has been growing over last 5 years – driven mostly by supplement and wellness industry (#DidYouKnow: #WomensWellness market is worth €35 billion globally with projected growth to €40 billion over next 4 years. )
As a doctor, much of the work I do with my patients going through menopause is actually to reduce the amount of unnecessary (and expensive) products/supplements they are using. #lifestylemedicine is an important part of the management plan for many women- with or without HRT, as appropriate.
There is so many urban myths and #nutribabble surrouding menopause right now, there could be an entire book dedicated to educating women…oh, wait, there is.
For #FactsNotFears and no-nonsense, I HIGHLY recommend “The Menopause Manifesto” by the amazing and fierce expert @drjengunter I also highly recommend giving her a follow on Instagram or checking out “The Vajenda” substack – I recommed starting with the article “10 things I Wish Everyone Knew About Menopause”

Too much current marketing aims to reduce women to nothing more than hormones. Just because a trend follows the money – doesn’t mean that it follows the science.
