If you are healthy, and you haven’t been prescribed a supplement by a INDI/CORU registered dietitian or your doctor, you probalby don’t need it.
The 2 exceptions are the someimes necessary supplements
#VitaminD and
#FolicAcid. For more info, check evidence-based guidelines @safefood
Supplements are part of a multi-billion € industry. Most of what is in those supplements just becomes expensive pee. Yes, that’s all that extra Vitamin C — your body just turns it into pee. Plenty more have failed to do as promised in multiple clinical trials (glucosamine, tumeric)
Despite the science, as we approach
#BackToSchool, there is will be no end to tonics, vitamins, and supplements of all sorts being marketed to “immune-boost”
And while most of it IS harmless physically, if this is making up a percentage of your household food budget, you are entitled to make an informed decision and not be misled by advertising or misinformation.
Adequate Vitamin C and adequate Vitamin D are part of a healthy immune system (also needed for other things too!) Most of us get enough Vitamin C in our diet, though – I mean, seriously, when was the last time you saw anyone with scurvy?
If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend “The Irrational Ape by Dr. David Robert Grimes. He has a section where he talks about teh story of how the urban myths around Vitamin C started.
For even more? You can check back on the Blog 6/2/22 when I shared a piece “Doctor, Please Just Don’t” I published on an external website of about a doctor’s ethical duty when promoting vitamins or supplements.
