It was a busy day and I was not looking forward to yet another Zoom, but I am so glad I did. This evening’s webinar included expert session on PCOS by an expert mother (gynaecologist) and daughter (registered nutritionist) team talking about their upcoming new evidence-based book on managing PCOS.
Book will be available in March 2022. I’ll post the links when it launches in a few weeks.
What are 5 fast facts that I want my patients with PCOS to know?
1. It’s really common (1:10 women but as many as 75% may be undiagnosed)
2. While many think of it as associated with excess weight gain, as many as 25% of patients are so-called “lean PCOS” (no associated excess weight gain).
3. Complications such as gestational diabetes, fertility problems, skin or hair problems, and mental health effects are common.
4. It’s not all about medications (though they really can help some patients!) Many patients also benefit dramatically from
#lifestylemedicine changes. So, even if you are not keen on meds, if you are struggling with symptoms or unsure if you have it, it is worth talking to your GP, gynaecologist, women’s health primary care, or a lifestyle medicine physician.
5. Women’s health deserves competent, evidence-based expert advice. Women’s health (from periods to pregnancy to menopause) has been disproprotionately targeted by fear-mongering pseudoscience, internet click-bait, and an exploitative wellness market (Goop is not a source of good medical advice – or scented candles – just saying).
#FactsNotFearsMy favourite books already on the market for women to get patient-centered, fact-based, expert-level education on their own bodies? “The Vagina Bible” and “The Menopause Manifesto” by Dr. Jen Gunter (you can order online).
