Baby C. was like a lot of babies with his fever: he was fussier than normal and didn’t want to eat alot. He looked a bit flushed. And he was clingy. This is an important thing that usually only a mammy can tell the doctor, and it is important. When your infant or toddler is sick, they often crave being held and carried more than normal, and may fuss or protest when being put down. We term this “clingy”.
Thermometer showed temp of 39, so he had some baby ibuprofen. And he got cuddles. Cuddles go leor.
It’s never nice to see your baby ill, but what things were reassuring me that it wasn’t yet time to panic or ring GP on-call about his fever?
Baby C. is 8 months old now. (It’s always time to check with GP when a baby less than 3 months old has a fever.)
He was taking regular fluids, even though not keen on eating much more than a little yogurt or fruit.
He was having wet nappies.
He had no cough, no wheeze, and no trouble breathing.
He had no rashes.
He was fussier than normal, but no prolonged crying and was easily soothed.
He wasn’t drowsy, and still alert and interested in playing.
The temperature settled itself in less than 72 hours.
Lastly: I wasn’t feeling worried, and that’s as important as anything else. If you are worried, listen to that little voice. Your mother’s intuition is always worth listening to.
