If you hate the gym, don’t join the gym.
(By the way, while this advice applies to the gym, most of it also equally could apply to that ill-advised impulse purchase of a treadmill or exercise bike you already hate before you even get it home from the local aisle of shame.)
The ads for the “New Year, New You” means that starting next week, not only will the middle aisles be full of fitness gadgets, but the gyms will be temporarily full. And there is nothing wrong with people who drop out. They haven’t failed. The goal they set wasn’t the right one for them.
I regularly prescribe exercise to my patients – however, I do not always prescribe the gym. In fact, when patients tell me they are going to join a gym – they are often surprised to hear me challenge that plan a little: do they like it? What will they do there? How close is it to work? When will they go?
