No, it doesn’t start on TikTok

This ad really annoyed me. Have you seen it? I mean, lots of things start on TikTok: Dances. “what I ate in a day” POV. Patatak Dogs. ASMR. All start on TikTok.

Also eating disorders. Diet Culture. Cancer misinformation. Women’s health misinformation. Nutrition misinformation. Mental health misinformation. Unsafe “parenting hacks”. Challenges with significant risk of injury. A disturbing amount of “cleaning hacks” are also dangerous and/or show a lack of understanding of principles of basic chemistry.**

When it comes to health, misinformation starts on TikTok. – between 40 – 73% of medical information is inaccurate. Among social media platform, TikTok is the worst for misinformation.

While many things start on TikTok, health does not really start on TikTok. But the latest video showing that it has the potential to get someone more active is misleading. It is far more likely, statistically, that watching video after video gets you hooked on watching more videos – not putting down your phone and getting outside.

Best advice? Follow verified experts on TikTok. Check their real world credentials. The amazing part of social media is that we can follow world-leading experts. When in doubt, ask your GP for guidance, especially before intense diets or purchasing expensive supplements. And always set screen limits.

Because when it comes to healthy habits, it doesn’t start on TikTok. TikTok is where healthy habits come to be buried in a tsunami of influencer nutribabble, bad science, and body shaming.

**Many TikTok cleaning hacks involve combinations or chlorine, ammonia, vinegar, or rubbing alcohol which can produce toxic gases: chloramine/mustard gas, chlorine gas, or chloroform.
