Hey, there, Quitter – what did you give up on today?
That #detox diet? Going to the gym every day? #DryJanuary is gone tonight, is it? And bye-bye #veganuary on the way home…
As you reach for that first cigarette since New Year’s Eve, there is one more thing you also need to quit:
The Guilt.
The second Friday in January is is Quitter’s Day. The vast majority of people give up their New Year’s Resolutions by today. One of many reasons I am not a fan of New Year’s Resolutions.
The important thing that is often not talked about is that there is nothing wrong with the people quitting – everything is wrong with the cultural approach to New Year’s Resolutions and the wellness marketing surrounding it. Many of the resolutions people make are simply trying to do too much, too soon, and are unsustainable. Also, sometimes people get bad advice on how to do it (especially weight loss or smoking)
If you are still going, well done you. If you aren’t, no problem.
But – if the New Year’s Resolution was an important thing that needed to change to improve your health — and many are!! — stop blaming yourself and get help. It’s a long time until next year.
And if you’re still going but finding it hard to do – ask for qualified help from health professionals.
