Something going around?

“Is something going around?”

Yes: Influenza (‘flu), Covid, and RSV as well as a mix of winter viruses such as rhinovirus (cold) and enterovirus (can cause fevers).

What does the current HPSC data tell us? Lots of things. Coughs are problem with almost all of these, and children under 4 and adults over 65 may be affected more by the flu circulating.

How do I boost my immune system and stay healthy? Wash your hands, make sure you are getting adequate vitamin D. If you are sick, stay home. The boring stuff is the stuff that works: eat well, get enough sleep.

What doesn’t treat or prevent winter viruses? Multi-vitamins, “tonics”, herbal supplements, salt therapy, chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation, any variety of vegetables cut up and put in socks/radiators/corner of the room.  Bonus:  If you got your flu, pneumo, and covid vaccines – these are great ways that you can protect yourself.

Looking after your virus at home? Check out HSE website for evidence-based advice on looking after your virus at home. You can also talk to your chemist or GP. If you think you have Covid or flu, be kind to others — phone ahead first!  More tips?

Did you know? A cough can linger for weeks after virus! But if you are worried or it is going on more than 3 weeks, talk to your GP.

Bonus take-away: You don’t need a cough bottle. In studies, a spoonful of honey (any honey, doesn’t need to be a specific type) worked better than cough bottles. (Remember to never give honey to infants less than 1 year old.)
