Sexual Health for Parents and Families

Written by Dr. Kate McCann
4th September 2024

4 September is World Sexual Health Day.

This year’s theme is Positive Relationships.

When people here “sexual health” – they immediately just think condoms. But sexual health is part of our overall health and well-being.

Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and relationships, safe experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.

Sexual health requires:

access to good-quality information

knowledge about the risks

ability to access sexual health care

an environment that affirms and promotes sexual health.

And this is a reminder that as great as online resources are – you can always ask your doctor. Seriously. You can’t shock us. It is impossible. And we will probably be more reassuring than that Dr. Google answer.
