Travel and Health – getting the most out of it

This Blog is quiet right now.

I’m travelling alot this Autumn.

Mostly lecturing and meetings but not all of it unenjoyable though: I spent a few days last week at a resort on the Mediterranean sea. And the food was superb: lots of grilled fish and amazing salads. The fact that the f ood was simply amazing wasn’t just the chefs. Not to take anything away from their skillset but the local vegetables in salads or fresh fruit, for example, required very little in the way of culinary help.

Travel really highlights how much of our diet depends on our environment.

I have a few of patients who have immigrated to Ireland from that region. Their diets – and health – have disimproved in the years since they arrived. They cite the poor selection of tasty and/or affordable fresh vegetables and fruits in local stores. And it’s a legitimate factor.

Tops tips for working with your environment when travelling:

1. Skip “dashboard dining” as a lifestyle. The odd road trip is fine, but if you are on the road constantly like my patients who work in trucking or policy, work on creating a longterm meal and snack plan that’s a sustainable.

2. How long is your “holiday” before it’s no longer a “holiday”? If you have a second property where you spend weeks each year or regulary travel to a location for work, switch off the holiday mindset. Sustained overindulgence in rich food or alcohol will eventually impact health and trying to address only when you are back “home” fails every time.

3. If you are travelling to places where the local diet is healthier or more affordable – especially along some areas along the Mediterranean – than the average fare available to you in Ireland, skip the chips and sausages and take advantage of trying new local or healthier foods. Eating well on holiday can help you get the full mental and physical health benefits of your time away.
