I enjoyed seeing everyone out on their new bikes and scooters yesterday afternoon – but, mammies, despite my letters this year, Santa forgot to leave some children’s helmets -again! ![]()
It’s a bit tricky to fit if you’ve never done it. This is T.’s new helmet in the photo. But it’s easy to follow the guide in the package or a YouTube from a trusted source. Many bike shops have knowledgeable staff that can help your child or teen select and fit a helmet.
If you don’t know where to start, Halfords has a great website and video. Definitely buy it any shop or online where you can get the best deal (this is one item to avoid second hand, if possible) , but this guide explains fitting, etc.

Want the evidence? 5 separate studies have found that helmets provide 63 to 88 % reduction in the risk of head, brain, and severe brain injuries and a 65 % reduction of injuries to the upper and mid-face. In the only included study that was limited to children <15 years of age, wearing a helmet reduced the risk of head injury by 63% and of loss of consciousness by 86%.
