All this week, we’re bringing the science to help you make informed decisions about your health as a patient – and consumer. We’ll be doing this one hormone at a time, Yesterday, we talked thyroid. – so if you have questions on testosterone or HRT, keep following…

So, today, let’s talk about the adrenals and cortisol and stress. Scroll through images above for top things you should know — especially before you hand over money for testing or treatment for “adrenal fatigue.”

And, as always, if you are left wondering whether more should be done to protect patients/consumers from fake diagnoses, unqualified practioners, predatory health misinformation, or exploitative treatments not based in evidence – you are not alone.

Remember: “Balancing hormones” is big business: from “clinics” with no actual medical doctors to supplement sales to crazy diets to home testing kits to online docs with no actual clinics….

Worth also pointing out once again: we import a great deal of health misinformation, especially via social media, from countries with poorer access to health care and poorer health literacy. In Ireland, reputable doctors are not looking for business. I always remind patients that there is no secret “doctors don’t want you to know” or withholding treatments because we are in pockets of big pharma. A quick look around your local GP or ED waiting room will confirm that.

An empowered patient is one who has the correct information and facts.
